Are you active duty military and serving over seas? Do you have a spouse about to deploy? Google Voice is here to help keep you connected even though many many miles are between you and your loved ones. Google Voice is brand new and only available via invitation currently. However if you have a .MIL email address you can get priority set up (with in 24 hours of requesting access) so you have an easy way to stay in touch with those you love and miss.

Google Voices gives you the service member a single phone that you can access online to make calls to friends and family while you are overseas. It also allows you listen to voice mail just as you would via your home phone or cell phone. 1 number, easy access, voice mail, staying connected. Google has hit a home run in my books with this one.

voice_logoIt is super easy to sign up, simply visit the Google Voice invitations for Military personnel. Sign up using your .MIL email address and Google will prioritize the request and send you back an invitation to use the service. It doesnt get much easy that that. I hope this helps some of you who are facing spending the up and coming holiday season away from your families while you are serving your country.

From the Official Google Blog post announcing the program:

When you deploy, your life is put on hold. While you live and work in a different world, everyone else moves on with life back home. Your family and friends keep moving, and this sometimes means it’s just not possible for them to stay awake until 2 a.m. to receive a phone call. Calling Iraq or Afghanistan is seldom an option.

Google Voice provides a solution to some of these problems. Service members can set up an account before they deploy. Or if they’re already deployed, families can now set up an account for their service member. Loved ones can call to leave messages throughout the day, and then when that service member visits an Internet trailer, all the messages are right there. It’s like a care package in audio form.
